Danny moved in his seat, the leather of the couches comfortable, and he was glad to be off his bike. The ride had been a long one and even he was surprised that Xavier never voiced a complaint. Now that they were in San Bernardino, he wondered if they shook off the two so-called hitmen Josephina’s estranged husband had sicced on them. If he knew anything about men and their obsession for beautiful women, he was sure they’d meet again.

“Yeah, for one hell of a piece of ass, one who managed to embezzle a small fortune from her husband. We both know Conrad; he’s tough, but I honestly couldn’t understand this whole love thing with Josephina. But I was there to help him. Xavier and I were able to throw her husband’s henchmen off of them and onto us. Though I’m sure they had quite an entourage looking for them,” Danny explained.

Danny watched Chaz’s expression change. “Women can tie a man up in knots.”

“No shit,” Danny answered, raising an eyebrow and looking toward the bar to Xavier and Torri.

“Xavier? Your old lady?”

Danny let out a small, deep laugh. “Now that’s a question. You see, she’s Josephina’s sister.”

Chaz sat up and Danny could only smile at the look of surprise on Chaz’s face. “Okay, now I’m curious.”

Danny rubbed his hands together. “Josephina needed help to get away from this guy she was with, real abusive fuck from what Xavier has told me. Who else could she turn to but her own sister? And well, here we are. And by the way, man, thanks for putting us up. I want all this shit to pass over us. I want to get to know Xavier a whole lot better.”

Chaz gave Danny a small, knowing grin. “I see. No problem.”

“There is one problem we have these two goombahs tailing us. Two clowns. We’ve managed to dodge them up until now. But I’d bet Xavier’s round ass that they’re here in San Bernardino already. They’re driving a black SUV, at least they were. Xavier has some money with her, part of what Josephina took from her husband. I’m afraid he has an idea she may have some of that money.”

Danny could see the look of concern on Chaz’s face. He’d taken in what he had to say. “This could be a bad thing. I needed to know more. “Do you know who Josephina’s husband is?”

“A guy named Braco. He’s a real thug, a gangster, but seems to slip beneath the radar where the law is concerned. This could turn serious,” Danny said, sharing his gut feeling with Chaz.

“I agree, it could. So we’ll have to find this black SUV, take care of it, and make sure Conrad stays safe.”

“Thanks. The guy saved my ass more than once while we were away,” Danny said with a soft smile.

“Yeah, upstanding kind of guy. Did the same for me. He told me about you. You were released before I got sent up. Good thing.” Chaz laughed. “Trying to protect the two us…” Chaz laughed again, “Would enough for any one man.
